Loving Layers

In Shimelle's Remix class we recently covered using layers.  This exercise has made me look at layers in a new way.  My favorite way of layering has always been with embellisments, but I have now discovered layering paper.  I have seen Shimelle layer lots of papers underneath photos in her layouts and now I find that it is such a great way to add depth and interest as well as use up paper. I have lots and lots of paper and I am now deciding what I should do with it all.  I love the new stuff, but have a hard time rationalizing buying anything new because I haven't used the old stuff.

This layering technique has given me some ideas about using up large pieces of paper.  For this page, I searched my stacks of paper as well as scrap box and came away with several that I would have never used together. I matted 2 prints on one of the sheets and stacked the rest in a disorderly fashion on kraft cardstock.

For me it's easier to put these patterns together because only bits are peaking out from the layered stack and they add interest and dimension rather than competing with each other for attention.

The finished page included layered photos as well as some stickers layered with punched pieces of paper.  Lots of layering fun on this layout.

here we go

Happy Halloween and yes my first post!  Looking foward to documenting my adventures in scrapbooking.  I have recently taken a few classes and am creating lots of layouts with the objective of finding my style.

There are so many awesome artists that I get inspiration from, but I felt my own style was not evident.  I looked back at several more recent layouts to see what I liked and didn't like.  I discovered I like neutral backgrounds with pops of color from patterned paper.  I truly love combining patterned paper and adding some embellishments.  I noticed that I particularly get excited when I use up old stash.  I have lots and lots of older stuff that I have not used and I get great satisfaction combining that stuff with newer stuff to make a modern looking page.

I'm taking Shimelle's Remix class and was trying to incorporate a blue paper with a bold, larger pattern on it. This is my creation:

The blue paper with the heart is from an old DCWV stack I believe called "Rockstar".  I also used on older acrylic swirly stamp and a 7 gypsies card for journaling.  I then added in the polka dot paper from Echo Park's For The Record collection.  Some older metal brads added some texture and finally I inked some older Tim Holtz grunge board letters I've been holding onto for the title as well as a Tim Holtz ticket.  I so enjoyed pulling out items I've collected and not used over the years. I see that I love layering these things and making embellishment clusters.  So much fun!
